December Tea Report: 2023 China Exports & US Imports

Data from the China Tea Marketing Agency, the Overseas Chinese Tea Industry Development Research Foundation, and the US Census Bureau (GATS) was recently published regarding China exports and US imports of tea for December 2023.

 

CHINA EXPORTS

HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE

• December total export volume DECREASED 5.0% year on year
• YTD total export volume is DOWN 2.1% over 2022
• GREEN tea accounted for 85.6% of total export volume
• Average prices DECREASED 27.6% over the previous December to $4.15/kg
• Exports of GREEN tea volume DECREASED 1.7% over December 2022
• Exports of BLACK tea volume DECREASED 27.6% over the same time last year

US IMPORTS

HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE

• Average price for GLOBAL imports was $4.79/kg, DOWN 4.6% over the previous December
• YTD total China imports are DOWN 33.6% over 2022
• Average price for CHINA imports was $4.97/kg, DOWN 3.2% over December 2022
• 31.6% of all GREEN tea import (volume) was from China, but only 15.7% of VALUE
• 32.1% of the month’s US ORGANIC tea import volume was from China
